Connect with the larger community
Efforts to create schools where there is equity and inclusive education are likely to be much more effective when schools establish and maintain links with the larger community. Community agencies and groups that have organized around equity issues can offer valuable expertise, information and guidance around addressing equity issues in schools.
Building partnerships with community groups and inviting them to have a presence in the school can help to ensure that students are continuously exposed to diverse voices. Resource people may also be found among parents and staff whose passion and commitment can help to galvanize the school community.
Members of the larger community with expertise and experience can be invited to participate in a range of initiatives aimed at equity and inclusive education, including activities for students and professional development opportunities for school staff.
