As we embark upon discussions related to youth empowerment, we can approach these as an exploration for ourselves and for the students. While it is valuable to authentically share our perspectives, it is not necessary for us to be experts in this area—which is, after all, focused on the lived experiences of young people. Instead, we can work together, listening carefully and allowing for questions, self-reflection, open discussion and collaboration.
Creating this kind of environment encourages honest sharing from students. The goal is to work together to develop respectful responses and workable strategies aimed at character development through youth empowerment in a school and classroom context.
